A nonprofit focused on improving hospital safety and quality in the U.S. gave nine Arizona hospitals an “A” grade in its biennial hospital safety report card.
The report by the LeapFrog Group rates general hospitals from A to F based on their ability to prevent medical errors, infections, accidents and other “avoidable harms.” In all, it gave more than 60% of Arizona hospitals at least a “C” for their safety.
The grades are based on expert analysis of publicly available data using “up to 31 evidence-based, national measures of hospital safety,” the group says on the website for the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.
What are the safest hospitals in Arizona?
Of the 51 Arizona hospitals rated by Leapfrog, nine received an A grade. They are:

- HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center in Scottsdale
- HonorHealth Sonoran Crossing Medical Center in Phoenix
- Mayo Clinic-Phoenix in Phoenix
- Mercy Gilbert Medical Center in Gilbert
- Banner Ocotillo Medical Center in Chandler
- Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler
- Kingman Regional Medical Center in Kingman
- Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood
What are the least safe hospitals in Arizona?
No Arizona hospitals received an “F” from Leapfrog, but nine received a “D” grade. They are:

- Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson
