School board races don’t usually get much attention compared to top-of-the-ticket elections.
But school board elections are still important. School board members set policies for the district, hire superintendents, and can make decisions about supplemental curriculum. For example, sex education isn’t mandatory in Arizona. If a school chooses to provide sex education, the lessons must be approved by the school board.
Yavapai County has 66 school board seats up for election this November. Some seats are for two-year terms and others are for four years. And remember: Everyone in the district votes for school board members, regardless of if they have children in public school or not. The people who govern school districts make decisions that impact the whole community—so be ready to vote for the candidates who share your values on Nov. 5.
